Optional Fee Opt-out Built Into Quest

We pay all sorts of extra fees that add up together, and over the years, and we would rather not be bothered to run around to get a dollar here and there, but if all of the optional fees we pay were opt-out-able from within the Quest interface, we would all be able to pay less monies to things we do not feel deserve our funding.

This is really an issue of the default choice being in the best interest of the student rather than the best interest of the institution.

Hand Sanitizer Provided on the GRT

One or two bottles of hand sanitizer on each GRT bus would be a great way to stop the spread of germs on campus and in Waterloo as a whole. How many people ride the city bus in a day? ALOT! Imagine how many times one person coughs into their hand, thinks nothing of it, then gets on the bus and holds onto the hand rails/straps. Now say even 50 bus users a day sneeze, cough, touch a germy door handle…then get on the bus. Now you touch it! You get off the bus and then touch your cell phone, you watcard, your back pack, maybe rub your eyes or touch your mouth. All this happens before you have a chance to go wash your hands. No wonder everyone is sick right now. The germs are being spread like crazy just from your bus ride to and from school/home. Its as simple as a few bottles of hand sanitizer available for any one who would like to protect themselves against the germs .

It would be nice to be able to log into this site using UW id/password, instead by having to sign-up and check the activation email.

      Hi jle234,
I’m one of the developers from UWWD assigned to redesign this site, and I think that would definitely be something we should implement. The only problem is, that both parties have to be willing to connect the sites. Websites such as Twitter, Facebook, etc. provide APIs that allow their existing users to connect from other websites. We just have to send out an inquiry for a system based on http://oauth.net for the uwaterloo website. So that partnering websites and applications can connect to their existing user-base. I feel that in this way the things discussed on partnering sites such these, will become more credible. Petitions can be held, and each voice will have more worth because of that crucial tie to Waterloo’s certified user-base.

What does everyone here think of the new proposed logo. Honestly, I hate it and think it looks unprofessional. Sure re-branding and change is good, but at least they should do it correctly.

  • Tuition Fees for CFM and Math/CA

I know that people who are reading this that aren’t in CFM or Math/CA wouldn’t care, but you should. The tuition fees of CFM and Math/CA are so high from second year and on, it’s near 8 grand for 4 months, that’s just a little less than what we make on our co-op terms, I personally don’t know about Math/CA but for CFM apparently many many people have dropped out of the program, even the girl from the CFM brochure, and most of them switched to CS, which you can take the AFM courses as an elective in upper years, thus don’t make much difference with CFM, of course their tuition fees are way lower in the 3-4 grand area. I, myself is in CFM and have thoughts about switching to CS. So all you guys in different programs will get a lot of us CFMs and Math/CAs in the future.

This increase in fees is evident across all accounting programs (i.e. Math/CA, CFM, AFM, and Biotech/CA). The reason is somewhat vague: A note about higher tuition fees that begin in second year
For some University of Waterloo programs, tuition fees increase at a higher rate than average after first year. These programs include Accounting and Financial Management, Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy, Computing and Financial Management, and Mathematics/Chartered Accountancy. Enhanced tuition fees reflect the enhanced benefits that students receive in these limited enrolment programs. (from http://www.math.uwaterloo.ca/navigation/Prospective/prospectiveFinances.shtml)

From what I’ve heard, the reasons include the costs for accreditation, the costs for smaller classes, the costs of being a professional program, government charges, and a bunch of other stuff. A lot of it seems meaningless/arbitrary to me. In the least, they should be very clear as to what the differences between these and other programs are, and why we have to pay a substantially higher fee.

I am in Math/CA and I am aware that the other accounting programs and CFM all have to pay the high tuition fee starting in 2nd year. From what I know, until few years ago (about 3 yrs I think) Math/CA tuition was just like the other Math programs (2-3 grand/term) for all 4 years of undergraduate years. I think Biotech/CA also did not pay as much tuition back then. It was only AFMs that paid high tuition in year 2-4. So I think this was unfair and I believe there were complaints from AFM program. UW’s solution was then to make all accounting programs pay higher tuition in 2nd year. Thus when I was expecting to pay 2 grand, I was notified that starting in my year, I had to pay over 6 grand/term. Thus UW increased the tuition fee for Math/CA by almost 3 times at once, not even gradually towards the same level as AFM tuition. I believe people asked for reasons behind this huge increase but I think there has been no clear answer yet.

I believe the PAC is getting re-roofed? (Correct me if I’m wrong)

I think the university should consider putting in a green roof on any building on campus that is getting their roof redone (or on top of new buildings they want to build).

    Make Wireless Seamless Across Campus

    1) Increase campus wireless access to outside the main buildings. Like on ring road. And maybe the UW plaza.

    2) Make it so the wireless doesn’t disconnect and reconnect as I move between access points. This is important if you’re connected to the internet from an iPhone/iPod. Each time I get disconnected, I have to type in my UW username/password to reconnect which is a pain.

    High School Leadership Conference

During my high school years, I really enjoyed attending leadership conferences, such as those organized by OSSSA. It was a great way to develop soft skills and to network. I think it would be great if UW can host one of these conferences on campus and Waterloo undergrads would have the opportunity to volunteer in organizing the events as well as running them. McMaster has been doing it for many years with a yearly conference known as CLAY (http://www.msumcmaster.ca/servicesandbusiness/clay/generalInfo/main.htm) and it’s been a huge success every year. I realize that Waterloo already hosts Shad Valley and Waterloo Unlimited during the summer, but those programs are purely or mostly academic-based. By having such a conference on campus, it would not only shed the “nerdy” image of Waterloo, it would also assist Waterloo students in developing soft skills.
